Berger 2008 Gruner Veltliner

I went into my favorite wine store yesterday, Country Roads in Marlborough, to see what was new and exciting and to replenish my wine cellar that had been greatly depleted over the last couple weeks. When I walked in I saw that they were featuring a couple of new bottles I had never seen before and I discovered this fabulous Gruner Veltliner. I was initially attracted to the different size and shape of the bottle and the funny little cap that sat on top, almost like a beer cap, and decided to give it a try.
This is the perfect wine to sip as the last days of summer roll by and we transition into fall, and it is priced under $12 for a 1 liter bottle. It will be hard for you to have just one glass.
What the Experts are saying:
Gruner is crisp and clean much like the air in the Austrian Alps—the same Alps which provided mountainous cover for the hurried departure of the Von Trapp family. For me Gruner provides another kind of escape—from the ubiquitous Chardonnay. Chardonnay is typically the default white for folks searching for an accompaniment to everyday food. An exotic array of fruit, herb and spice flavors, attractive mineral undertones and mouth puckering acidity. Fresh, clean, light citrus fruit flavor, refreshing acidity, with floral and mineral hints. Not overpowering, simple enough to enjoy without heavy contemplation, an overall fun and friendly wine. Oxford Landing GSM

Wow. This wine is really good! Could be one of my new favorites. I can't believe I have never tried GSM before. What a fantastic blend of grapes. I used to be turned off by the screw top on a bottle of wine, always made me think that there is no way this could be good. But I have been proven wrong repeatedly and this is a perfect example. Great fruit flavor, nice body, soft tannins, and really smooth finish.
Winemaker's notes:
The nose shows bright fruit aromas of fragrant raspberries and plums, a hint of white pepper and a dash of nutmeg and allspice." The palate is generous and fruit driven with layers of cherries, red berried and spice from the Grenache." Fuller plum and dark fruit flavors from the Shiraz provide flesh and weight in the mid palate with the fine soft tannins providing structure and a slightly savory finish.

Today I got stuck in the office underneath a pile of work and sent my husband on a mission to pick up a bottle of wine from my favortie Country Roads package store to select the featured wine of the week. So tonight we are tasting together. Cheers!
Tasting Notes: Quite different than most New Zeland Sauvignon Blancs, this wine is quite lovely. It is an elegant and crisp wine with citrus notes and a fresh, clean finish. Exceptionally versatile wine that pairs perfectly with chicken, Ceasar salad, grilled fish, seafood and creamy pasta sauces.

Flavium Crianza Bierzo, $8.99
I had never heard of the Mencia varietal until I discovered this amazing wine through my friend at Country Roads Wine Shop in Marlborough, CT. It is a new favorite! Who said wine had to be expensive to be good?!

When we first moved to East Hampton, CT I discovered a true gem of a wine store in the neighboring town of Marlborough called Country Roads. The owner of the shop, from Australia is the nicest person you could meet. Greeting each customer with a smile and her Australian accent she glows with personality. And she is amazing for discovering really incredible wines for under $10. So I thought I would share with you each Friday my pick of the week, since most of you probably won't make it out to this part of the state.
However, if you are ever on Rt 2 in Marlborough, you have to hop off the highway and visit her store. Every bottle has a tag on it with her personal review of the wine, which makes shopping for a bottle of wine a true experience. I have never gone wrong in selecting!
